The Role of Detergents in Membrane Reconstitution

Abstract

The study of amphiphilic molecules has a long and distinguished history, including Traube’s initial investigation of surface activity (1891), the introduction of the concept and term “micelle” by McBain (1913), and the first rigorous description of the solution properties of these important structures by Hartley (1936). It is unlikely that early workers in this field could have foreseen the impact their research would eventually have in the study of living systems. Consider, for example, a number of currently widespread experimental procedures.
