Abstract

When there is gross instability that is measurable on x-rays and that creates obvious neurological damage and pain at a single level, the diagnosis and treatment are quite simple and clear. These are cases usually of spondylolisthesis, degenerative instability, or iatrogenic postoperative instability. Stabilizing one such unstable level with any type of fusion will readily give relief in the vast majority of cases.
