Abstract

John Barrow addresses one of the key challenges faced by cosmologists today: the nature of large-scale structure in the universe and its origin. He discusses the related practical problem of quantifying the measures of the distribution of galaxies, the visible “building blocks” of the material universe and assumed tracers of this structure. The generally accepted view is that the origin of the observed distribution of galaxies is the initial density fluctuations that existed in the universe at early epochs. The fluctuations evolve through physical processes, creating the distribution of galaxies observed at the present epoch.

“We believe that the mathematical tool appropriate for the treatment of problems of cosmology is the theory of stochastic processes.”
