Abstract

The aim of the ARISTOTELES mission is to determine on a global scale the Earth gravity and magnetic fields to an unprecedent level of accuracy and spatial resolution. The final performance of the gravity field reconstitution is expected to be better that 5 mgal, possibly as good as 1 mgal, for a 100 km half wavelength resolution. The final performance of the magnetic field reconstitution will be 1 nT for die scalar measurements and 3 nT for the vector measurements. Practically the whole Earth (including poles) will be covered. This paper describes the scientific aims, the mission, the spacecraft, and the instruments to be flown. The main aim of the paper is to demonstrate how the use of a new type of orbit mission profile allow the enhancement of the scientific return without unduly complicating the spacecraft.
