Cardiac Ultrasound: Its Role in the Recognition and Management of Fetal Heart Disease

In the last 10 years, the widespread availability of newer cardiac ultrasound imaging techniques has greatly improved the ability to make reliable fetal cardiac diagnoses.1 Though success in imaging and obtaining physiologic information from fetal hearts had been achieved using M-mode echocardiography and continuous-wave Doppler ultrasound, the development of two-dimensional echocardiography (2-DE) and pulsed Doppler ultrasound has provided images and physiologic information of sufficient quality that accurate fetal diagnoses of structural heart disease and arrhythmias can now be made as early as 16 to 20 weeks of gestation.
