Information about the image received by photoreceptor cells flows through the retina via parallel channels. Each channel codes specific qualities of the visual information, such as color, brightness, or contrast. It is assumed that the first stages of these channels are at the level of bipolar cells (Gouras 1991). Models of retinal functions must consider the quantitative cellular composition of this tissue.
