Pteridaceae Reichenbach

Genera 32–65

  • Chapter
Spores of the Pteridophyta

Abstract

A family of 34 genera recognized in six distinctive tribes: Taenitideae, Platyzomateae, Ceratopter-ideae, Pterideae, Cheilantheae, and Adianteae (Tryon & Tryon, 1982). Many genera are widely distributed on all continents, and several are local endemics. The spores are tetrahedral-globose to globose, and with rare exception, trilete. The exospore is two-layered. The usually thin perispore often includes rodlets, and is generally more elaborate than in spores of primitive families. There are two main spore types in the Pteridaceae. Those of the tribes Taenitideae through the Pterideae (above) usually have coarse ridges and a prominent equatorial flange formed by the exospore, somewhat resembling spores of Anemia. Spores of the Cheilantheae usually have a plain exospore below prominent wings, sheaths, or echinate contours. They often include rodlets, formed by the perispore, and clearly differ from the coarsely ridged type of spores. The tuberculate to papillate perispore of Llavea is exceptional in the tribe. Most species of the Adianteae have a plain, laminate surface that differs from spores of other genera in the Pteridaceae. A few species of Adiantum have an especially complex perispore of three layers, the inner one of irregular, spheroidal material.
