Abstract
Richard was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on January 31, 1924, the second son of Jacob and Hedwig Büchi-Eigensatz. The family, including his one-year-older brother, James, returned to St. Gallen, Switzerland, when Richard, christened Julius Richard, was two years old. There his younger brother, Edgar, was born. The Büchis came from the Canton of Zürich, where the family can be traced back to the Reformation in the church records from Elgg and Zell. Richard had an ideal childhood. The household included, at various times, three grandparents and an aunt. They formed a close-knit, happy family. All three brothers became good tennis players and skiers, encouraged by their father, who had played soccer as a young man in St. Gallen and Porto Alegre.
