Waves in Anisotropic Media

Conference paper
Part of the Woodward Conference book series (WOODWARD)

Abstract

Recently there have been extensive studies on waves in anisotropic media such as liquid crystals [1]. In these anisotropic liquids a wave can be optically observed with a polarizing microscope or with the naked eye [2]. Since the study of linear waves in liquid crystals is well documented [3], in this presentation emphasis will be put on nonlinear waves. A summary of development on the latter up to 1985 was given by LAM and SHU [2].
