Abstract

This chapter provides its reader with a quick view of the basic algebraic notions of ring and field illustrated with familiar examples. Its last section is devoted to the elements of linear algebra. The many easy R-exercises are supposed to make the reader familiar with the definitions and the terminology. The text is also a preparation for Chapter 6 on algebraic complexity theory.
