Abstract
The presence of cortical atrophy, as demonstrated by computed tomographic (CT) imaging, is associated with a variety of neuropathological conditions, including progressive degenerative diseases, cerebral trauma, secondary effects of cerebrovascular disease, and anoxia (see Figure 2.1). Although the presence of cortical atrophy in the patient presenting with symptoms of dementia is considered to be one of the diagnostic signs associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) (Cutler et al., 1984; Scheibel & Wechsler, 1986), the mere presence of atrophy of CT imaging is not a sine qua non indicator of dementia or AD.
