Propylene chlorohydrins: toxicology, metabolism, and environmental fate

Abstract

Propylene chlorohydrins is a general term for two isomeric chemicals, 1-chloro-2-propanol (1-CP) and 2-chloro-l-propanol (2-CP). The background information on the molecular structures, synonyms, and chemical and physical properties of these chemicals are summarized in Table I. Although these chemicals are of great commercial importance to the chemical industry and the volume of production is huge, relatively little toxicological information was available in the literature. However, despite the scanty nature of the available literature, the commercial importance of these chemicals, the presence of these chemicals as residues in foods, and the lack of a central source of current information are sufficient reasons to warrant this review. Therefore, this paper consolidates the currently available published information on propylene chlorohydrins.
