Abstract
Artists, authors, and songwriters regard love as the key feature of adult family life in Western civilization (Swidler, 1980). “Love” was present in the family identity responses as a word that described the feelings of adults for their spouses and children. When the word was used, though, it was never defined further. The respondents took it as a given that love was a definition sufficient unto itself.
