Ultrasonography of the Eye and Orbit

  • Chapter
Diagnostic Imaging in Ophthalmology

Abstract

Ultrasonic techniques are essential for evaluation of the eye and orbital disorders. Ultrasound measures the eye accurately for calculating intraocular lens implants. More important diagnostic uses of ultrasound in the globe are to detect hidden hemorrhaging, retinal or choroidal detachment, vitreous organization, intraocular tumors, or foreign bodies. For orbital diagnosis, ultrasound identifies tumors with a high degree of tissue-typing and differentiates congestive and inflammatory orbital disorders.
