Sea-Level Rise along the Lima Coastal Zone, Perú, as a Result of Global Warming: Environmental Impacts and Mitigation Measures

Abstract

If the sea-level rises, the beaches along the Lima Coastal Zone, Perú, will be submerged. The effects of two scenarios proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a 0.30-m and a 1.00-m rise in sea level, are considered, and adaptation measures are recommended. In recent years, marine erosion has greatly affected La Punta, requiring that certain areas be protected with groynes and breakwaters. The sea has retreated, and the narrow beaches have widened. These measures are good examples of how to protect a coastline should the sea rise as a result of global warming or other reasons.
