Are the Responses of Matorral Shrubs Different from Those in an Ecosystem with a Reputed Fire History?

  • Chapter
The Role of Fire in Mediterranean-Type Ecosystems

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 107))

Abstract

The California chaparral has become a model for how terrestrial vegetation adapted to natural fires can respond to this disturbance. The large amount of research done to date on the California chaparral and the diversity of its responses have transformed this ecosystem into a model, especially for the five Mediterranean-type communities. Of particular importance here has been the relatively high frequency of summer lightning as a source of natural ignition and thus the possibility of using the conceptual tools of evolutionary biology in the interpretation of the various responses.
