The Siting and Development of Mediterranean Harbors in Antiquity

Abstract

The lands of the Eastern Mediterranean have traditionally been studied as isolated units from the point of view of their history and civilizations. Only when a society reached an organizational and economic level that produced surpluses and a technology that required imports of raw materials and produced finished manufactured goods for export have historical studies ventured outside that civilization’s boundaries and begun to investigate imperial military campaigns, overland trade routes and the trading cities along these routes. This approach, investigating first the isolated civilization, and then its closest neighbors, has been followed very consistently.
