Abstract
The human thyroid gland consists of two main lobes, which are located laterally in the neck, attached to the upper part of the trachea, and connected by a bridge or isthmus (Fig. 27.1). It weighs about 20 g in the normal adult, but its size varies considerably. Under certain conditions it may become either enlarged (hypertrophy) or smaller than normal. The gland is highly vascular and innervated by the sympathetic system.
