Interactive Use of the Light-Pen in Finite Element Limit Load Analysis

  • Chapter
Advanced Computer Graphics

Abstract

Upper and lower bounds of the collapse load of complex structures can be obtained by using the finite element method in conjunction with optimization procedures. It has been found that following this course can suffer from two disadvantages, viz. the optimization procedures can be expensive in time and can on occasions find a local rather than a global optimum. It has been found in one study, which will be reported, that these difficulties can be overcome by interacting with the computer by means of a light-pen.
