Diffusion and Permeation of Hydrogen Isotopes in Fusion Reactors: a Survey

  • Conference paper
The Chemistry of Fusion Technology

Abstract

Conceptual designs of fusion reactors indicate that efficient containment and recovery of tritium are essential to the economics and safety of the system. The various problems associated with tritium containment and recovery are illustrated by considering a specific reactor design, and the candidate materials and estimated operating conditions are identified. The principal thermodynamic and kinetic relations for hydrogen solubility, diffusivity, and permeability are summarized, and the available experimental data for the candidate materials are surveyed. On the basis of this survey, the need for additional data is outlined.
