Biological Aspects of Circadian Rhythms

Abstract

Today a branch of biological science, chronobiology, objectively describes an organism’s or ecosystem’s time structure, i.e., its non-random and thus predictable changes including rhythms [1] along with changes related to growth, development and aging. Biological time structure characterizes populations or groups as well as individual organisms or their sub-divisions: organ-systems, organs, tissues, cells and intra-cellular elements, including electron-microscopic ultrastructure. Several aspects of biological rhythms are innate, yet these rhythms are eminently adaptive: they are synchronized, modulated or at least influenced by a broad range of cyclic or other social or geophysical factors [1–4].
