On Nuclear Magnetic Ordering Phenomena in Van Vleck Paramagnetic Materials

Abstract

Magnetic interactions between nuclei of Van Vleck paramagnetic ions are greatly enhanced in the presence of magnetic exchange interactions between the ions. This leads to relatively large and easily observable nuclear magnetic susceptibilities in the temperature range below 1°K and to cooperative nuclear magnetic ordering phenomena in the millikelvin range. If the exchange interactions exceed a critical value, the singlet ground state becomes unstable and electronic order occurs at low temperatures. For exchange interactions close to the critical value (but somewhat below it) a mixed electronic—nuclear phase transition can be expected. This critical region is examined in the molecular field approximation and the results are discussed and compared with calculations by Murao.1
