FSH-Induction of Androgen Binding Protein in Testes of Sertoli Cell-Only Rats

Abstract

Administration of a single dose of FSH to immature rats results in the initiation of a complex series of biochemical events within cells present in testicular seminiferous tubules (1). In order to better define these events in chemically precise terms we have recently developed an animal model in which the tubules are devoid of all germ cells from birth. These Sertoli-cell only animals (SCO) respond to FSH in a manner which is indistinguishable from the effects noted in normal rats (2). Thus, after much indirect evidence the Sertoli cell emerges unequivically as a primary target cell for FSH.
