Part of the book series: Current topics in Molecular Endocrinology ((CTME,volume 2))

Abstract

Testosterone, in large doses, maintains spermatogenesis following hypophysectomy (1,2), suggesting a direct effect on the testis. Androgen target cells in other organs such as prostate (3–8), epididymis (9–14), and seminal vesicles (15) have been shown to contain receptor proteins for 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and testosterone (T). It is believed that androgenic stimuli to target cells are mediated through such receptor proteins.
