Abstract
Over several years my colleagues and I investigated the adjuvant action of mycobacteria and related genera, such as the nocardias and corynebacteria. In 1965, on a visit to Professor Halpern in Paris, I learned of the remarkable microorganism which he was investigating called Corynebacterium parvum. Nothing stimulates like a paradox—and the paradox for me was that in my experience up to that time, true corynebacteria, in spite of their close taxonomical relationship with the mycobacteria and nocardias, did not show the same type of adjuvant properties. Thus, I propose to use the opportunity of this presentation to contrast the adjuvant properties of C. parvum and its relatives with those of mycobacteria and their relatives. This may be useful in clarifying our ideas on the way to search for the molecules involved in these two distinct types of biological activities.
