Of the hundred or more yeast species recognized by modern taxonomists only about a dozen have been examined in more detail from the point of view of their transport properties. Among the several hundred fungal species the situation is even less comforting, transport data being available in a rather happenstance manner and by no means permitting of a more general picture of the membrane transport mechanisms to be made.
