Abstract

Organic pollutants, as described briefly under the heading of population growth and its by-products, consist principally of animal excreta (domestic sewage) and refuse plant and animal material. Microorganisms are estimated to account for about 90 percent of the mass of fecal discharges and for this reason are a major component of domestic sewage.
