Abstract

Mr. Chairman, I must say that I am afraid that you are a little over-optimistic, because if I am supposed to give a story in which each element is given its proper accent and its proper weight, I should present a piece in the form of a well-balanced composition. Unfortunately, I am not able to do so, because the number of subjects and topics touched upon is so overwhelmingly large. Moreover, one cannot really prepare a lecture like this, because one has to sit down and wait for what will be said by the various speakers. It is only due to the fact that a team of Assistant Professors has very rapidly and precisely provided me with notes on what has been said during these days, that I can venture to undertake the task of making some concluding remarks. What I am going to present to you, then, is a kind of rhapsody, and not a really solid composition. The only thing I may trust is that it will not turn out to be a Rhapsody in Blue, to quote the expression used by Negro singers, in which “blue” means pessimistic or gloomy.
