Immunological Potential of Yolk Sac Cells

Abstract

Yolk sac cells have been shown to be the source of hemopoietic cells in the embryo (1) and to provide lymphoid precursor cells to the thymus (2), bursa of Fabricius (3) and embryonic liver (4). Accordingly, study of the ontogeny of the immune response should begin with analysis of the yolk sac cells. The questions raised in this respect are whether at this early stage of development the cells already have the potential to produce immune responses, and whether they can express such a potential. Answering this may advance the understanding of the generation of diversity.
