Contribution of the Bursa of Fabricius to the Maturation of the B Cell System in Chickens
In a previous paper (1) it was shown that in 6 week old chickens surgical bursectomy and X-irradiation (BX/600 rads) did not prevent de novo formation of germinal centres, in contrast to the well known effects of bursectomy and irradiation immediately post hatching. On the other hand a marked though transitory deficiency in the lymphocyte population surrounding Schweigger Seidel sheaths (sheath lymphoid system, SLS) was noticed. This seemed to indicate that beyond a certain age the B cell system in chickens had matured to a stage where bursal influence (humoral?, cellular?) is less essential and the system had become self-perpetuating, suggesting a non-bursal site taking over (see also: 2, 3).
