Lymphocytes and Hemopoietic Bone Marrow Cells — Antigenic Relationships between these Cells and Lymphatic Tissue Repopulation from Stem Cells
Attempts to separate bone marrow (BM) lymphocytes from hemopoietic BM cells are of increasing interest but opposed by many difficulties. A complete separation would allow for better understanding of the relationship between these cells, including the early events of lymphocyte formation. The most important practical aspects can be expected in BM transplantation since complete elimination of lymnhocytes could prevent GVHR. Our separation attempts were based on the observation that different types of cells within the same organism can exhibit different patterns of surface antigenic determinants. Thus the following questions were asked: (l) To what extent do lymphocyte cell surface antigens, i.e. physiologically accessible antigens, share determinants with the surfaces of the different hemopoietic cells and consequently, how can cell type-specific antilymphocyte sera be prepared? (2) To what extent and how fast does repopulation of lymphatic organs occur in lethally irradiated rats after restitution with lymphocyte-free as compared to untreated BM in syngeneic or strongly allogeneic donor/recipient combinations?
