Abstract

The survival of thyroid transplants in allogeneic mice has been strikingly prolonged by first culturing the grafts for several weeks in vitro (1). Two alternative mechanisms have been proposed for the prolonged survival:
  1. (1)

A modification of tissue antigens occurs during the in vitro culture resulting in a loss of tissue antigenicity.

  2. (2)

Some of the leucocytes trapped in the graft are essential for the activation of recipient T-lymphocytes, and are gradually lost during the in vitro culture.
