Stimulation of Adenylate Cyclase in the Thyroid

Abstract

In 1962 Klainer et al. (1) reported the presence of an adenylate cyclase in the thyroid, responsive to the pituitary hormone, TSH1. Since then, research has mainly been directed towards determining the relevance of cyclic AMP as a regulator of the thyroid follicular cell, particularly in response to TSH. However, during the course of this work, many other compounds have been tested as potential stimulators of adenylate cyclase in the thyroid. In this paper, evidence that thyroidal adenylate cyclase can be activated by compounds as diverse as immunoglobulins, prostaglandins and catecholamines as well as TSH will be discussed. It is, as yet, too soon to debate the physiological significance of these responses and discussion is directed towards characterisation of the response to each different group of agonists, and consideration of the influence this might bear on our ultimate concept of the hormone-receptor/membrane adenylate cyclase system(s) operative in the thyroid.
