Studies on the Permissive Effect of the Thyroid on fat Cells

  • Chapter
Eukaryotic Cell Function and Growth

Abstract

Fat cells from normal rats respond to a variety of hormones (including the catecholamines, glucagon and ACTH with an increase in the rate of lipolysis. Most of the available evidence is compatible with the hypothesis that this effect is mediated by cyclic AMP (1). Fat cells from hypothyroid rats are unresponsive to these hormones, which is to say that thyroid hormones exert a permissive effect for lipolysis. We have recently carried out a series of studies designed to elucidate the mechanism of this effect.
