Abstract
Despite the considerable quantity of data1,2,3 that has been produced on MgO:Cr2+, uncertainty still exists as to the detailed model of the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in this system.4,5 Specifically, is the picture one of rapid rotation (tunnelling splitting 3Γ much larger than D, the reduced spin-orbit coupling) implying only slight warping of the Mexican-hat potential, or is the system more closely approximated by the slow rotation or tunnelling model (3Γ ≃ D)?
