Hobson’s Choice in Action Research

  • Chapter
Experimenting with Organizational Life

Abstract

The research project discussed in this chapter suggests that collaboration giving a choice to participants can present the researcher with no choice but withdrawal; hence the title of Hobson’s choice. We first discuss the nature of collaborative relationships. Next, we describe the client organization and the purpose of the project. Then an account is given of the various phases of the project: negotiating access, making contact, gathering information, and requesting shop- floor sanction. The discussion treats some of the reasons underlying the shop- floor decision. Finally, the latest developments are briefly indicated.
