Influence of Electron Capture on X-ray Production in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Summary

Recent investigations are summarized which show that electron capture and other quenching processes can play an important role for the x-ray production in ion-atom collisions. In particular, electron capture affects the distribution of excited projectile states inside solids and causes nonproportional target-thickness dependence of projectile x-ray yields. This may give rise to difficulties in the measurement of projectile x-ray cross sections, but allows determination of lifetimes of projectile states. New results are presented on the oscillatory behavior of projectile xray yields as a function of target species and on the spectral shape of radiative electron capture.
