Abstract

The cervix whose functions are primarily mediated by its mucus, is situated at the entrance to the upper genital tract in which the reproductive processes of fertilisation, implantation and development of the pregnancy takes place. Abnormalities of the cervix and its secretions are considered by some authors (Steinberg, 1958; Marcus and Marcus, 1963) to be responsible for over 15% of cases of infertility. Others, (Moghissi, 1976) are of the opinion that the true incidence is probably not greater than 5–10%. Nevertheless, within the cervix there might be a significant factor in a couple’s infertility per se or the examination of its mucus might be the means of recognising other important causes of their failure to conceive. More attention to the cervix and its mucus is needed by clinicians dealing with infertility problems.
