Inherited Immunodeficiency in Chickens: A Model for Common Variable Hypogammaglobulinemia in Man?

In 1974 we observed several sera from chickens from two particular families of hybrids which by immunoelectrophoresis (IE) had greatly reduced 7S Ig (low molecular weight immunoglobulin). Some of these sera also had elevated amounts of 17S Ig (high molecular weight immunoglobulin) and will be referred to as dysgammaglobulinemic. Examples of abnormal IE patterns observed are shown in Fig. 1.
