Abstract
A microemulsion is a clear, stable fluid consisting of essentially monodisperse oil in water (o/w) or water in oil (w/o) droplets with diameters generally in the range 10–60 nm. The intermediate size of the microdroplets (between classical emulsion drops and spherical micelles) and the high volume fraction they occupy (20–80%) render micellar emulsions of great potential value for the study of reactions and interactions at microscopic oil-water interfaces. We have conducted a number of physical and chemical investigations in principally ionic systems of the o/w type in order to survey the properties of these media. The studies include acid-base equilibrium in both the continuous and disperse phases, and dye adsorption and reaction. The results are correlated with the physical studies and are discussed in terms of the roles of the continuous phase and the droplet surface (interphase) and interior.
