The Effect of Aging and Physical Activity on the Stabile Component of Arterial Distensibility

Abstract

Arterial distensibility can be expressed by pressure-volume (P-V) curves of the limb arteries. The P-V curves of an artery depend on two components:
  1. 1.

    The elastic properties of the arterial wall, which depend on its composition (i.e., on the relation of collagen to elastic fibers) (Roach and Burton, 1957).

     
  2. 2.

    The state of contraction of the musculature in the arterial wall (i.e., arterial tone) which can modify the P-V curve.
