Electrochemical Injection of Ions into Non-Stoichiometric Electrodes

Abstract

Selected non-stoichiometric compounds can function as a host lattice for the incorporation of many elements such as hydrogen, lithium, sodium, oxygen, which can function as the electro-active species in a variety of electrochemical devices. Providing the kinetics of dissolution into the solid compounds are rapid and providing that relatively large quantities of the solute can be incorporated, then these non-stoichiometric solids can be used as solid solution electrodes (S.S.E.) in appropriate electrochemical cells. The characteristics of a solid solution electrode (S.S.E.) are somewhat different from those normally associated with traditional electrode materials and these differences can be illustrated with reference to the following two electrochemical cells:
