Abstract
Since the early 1960’s, one of the most controversial subjects in the field of surgical and special care facilities has been the use of laminar flow systems. A considerable amount of confusion exists on the value of such systems in preventing surgical wound infections. Therefore, this chapter will review the theory of laminar airflow control, its origin and present-day application in clean rooms, laboratory facilities, pharmaceutical field, etc. A review of some of the studies conducted in these facilities with respect to air and surface sampling of bacteriological content is also included. Thus, Chapter 8 will be more meaningful in its review of the application of this technology in the medical field.
