Note
Strictly speaking, economies of scale and increasing returns to scale are related, but they are not one in the same. Increasing returns to scale are only the technological component of economies of scale. Another component of economies of scale may be derived from pecuniary effects. We will, however, use increasing returns to scale and economies of scale interchangeably.
