Second Messenger Responses and Regulation of High Affinity Receptor Binding to Study Pharmacological Modifications of Gabaergic Transmission

  • Chapter
Amino Acids as Chemical Transmitters

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((NSSA,volume 16))

Abstract

One of the current research trends in neuropharmacology centers on possible mechanisms whereby drugs modify GABA transmission (Costa, 1977; Johnston, 1976). This concern about new developments in the pharmacology of GABA transmission stems from the direct or indirect implication of GABA in the pathogenesis of Huntington’s chorea (Perry et al., 1973), Parkinson’s disease (McGeer et al., 1971), epilepsy (Wood and Peesker, 1974) senile dementia, schizophrenia, anorexia nervosa and other neurological disorders (Roberts, 1976).
