Abstract

In September 1953 three young men sat on the grass on the grounds of the Allan Memorial Institute of Psychiatry, McGill University, in Montreal, Canada. The Allan Institute is situated on the slopes of Mount Royal (Fig. 1) and the view of the city below was spectacularly beautiful (Fig. 2). September and October are the best months in Montreal, with unexpected warmth, clear skies, and brilliant colors in the trees. But the young men were not looking at the scenery; they were planning experiments.
