Abstract

The echocardiogram can provide a useful assessment of left ventricular performance. The recording of left ventricular minor axis diameter by conventional M mode echocardiography gives a number of parameters including percent fractional shortening, ejection fraction and velocity of circumferential fibre shortening (VCF). A marked generalized reduction in ventricular function is easily detected but early changes may produce few measurable differences from normal values.
