Transcardiac Visualization of a Left Subphrenic Abscess

  • F. J. Gardner

Abstract

A left subdiaphragmatic abscess can be difficult to visualize when the left lobe of the liver is small, bowel gas is present and the lateral ribs create artifacts in the area of the abscess. This paper presents one case where the heart was used as an ultrasonic window to better visualize a left subphrenic abscess. The maneuver was relatively easy to perform and may represent an alternate approach for the technician when routine methods prove inadequate.
