Abstract

The first session of the Conference was concerned with basic principles of ecology. A group of ecologists who had specialised in the analysis and description of the behaviour of populations and ecosystems using mathematical language were invited to illustrate the kinds of insight this approach gives. The session was particularly directed towards improving the accuracy of predictions about the course of change in ecological systems, whether in response to natural factors or human influence.
