Impact of Surface Physics on Catalysis

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: The IBM Research Symposia Series ((IRSS))

Abstract

No real catalyst is a single component system. It is a multi-component cocktail designed to meet three requirements — activity, selectivity and stability. The reality is at least one major component usually dispersed finely over a high surface area refractory support, which may or may not perform an active catalytic role itself, plus one or more modifiers often called promoters. We have used surface physics to define the role of the modifiers and will be discussing our conclusions in respect to nickel and platinum catalysts.
